A young boy has died after sustaining head injuries from an accident inside Atlanta's Sun Dial Restaurant.

A spokesman for the Atlanta Police Department told the Daily News the child, 5, was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital Friday afternoon.

The boy was dining at the popular rotating eatery, located in downtown Atlanta atop the Westin hotel, with his parents when he wandered away from the table. Police said the boy somehow became lodged between the wall and a table as the dining area rotated.

The rotation automatically shut off and the Westin's security staff and restaurant employees were able to dislodge the boy, Atlanta police said. The child, whose identity was not released, was rushed to the hospital with head trauma but died from his injuries.

Authorities said the family was visiting Atlanta from Charlotte.

Following the tragic incident, the restaurant announced it would be closed this weekend and reopen Monday, AJC.com reported.

The Sun Dial Restaurant opened 4 decades ago, but closed for renovations in 2010. It reopened in 2013.

The restaurant has become a popular destination for tourists because it provides a 360 view of the city with its slowly spinning dining room.
