The Survey of India is planning to “re-measure” Mount Everest in the aftermath of the earthquake in Nepal in 2015, said M. Stalin, director, Karnataka Geo-spatial Data Centre, Survey of India (Department of Science and Technology), Bengaluru, said.

Taking part in the 14th International conference on Science, Engineering and Technology at VIT University here on Tuesday, Mr. Stalin said that as per the measurement carried out in the year 1856, Mount Everest’s height is 29,028 feet.

As per the latest National Mapping Policy 2005, they have come out with Open Series Maps (OSM) that enable any person in any area gain access to any topographical map on 1:50,000 scale. “Under the National Urban Information System, we have generated large-scale maps for over 130 cities in India in the first phase,” he said.

He pointed out that on April 10, the Union Minister for Science and Technology launched a portal – Nakshe. “By using the Aadhaar card number, people can access any map in PDF format on this portal,” he added.

Mr. Stalin mentioned that they were going to release the State map of Karnataka in Kanada, Hindi and English shortly. This year, the Survey of India was commemorating 250 years of service to the nation.
